I suggest anti-seize. I think the FSM says to use a light coat of oil. I used blue thread locker. Mace rock scientist. Staff member. I would think that Antisieze would help you get a more accurate torque measurment. Chase the threads in the block, wire brush the threads on the bolts, then apply a light film of oil to the head bolt threads.
I'm getting outvoted Sorry woody - it's standard practice on almost every vehicle I've ever worked on! The FSM for the F does not say anything about lube. Joined Jun 11, Messages 1, Location high desert, ca.

Light oil them. You don't want any dry resistance creating a false torque reading, especially on head bolts.Part Usually leaves our warehouse in 8 to 14 business days.

I had to adjust the needle valve on carburetor as it would run. At night the muffler would glow red. And fire was coming out the exhaust.

I went to remove the head bolts out the aluminum head and block. The one we had to Helicoil, the others threads were saved by putting it on a vertical milling machine and end milled the broken bolt out. Safety first clean oil and remove carburetor. Any way. Back the reason ,the exhaust valve I measured with feeler gage to have only 3 or 4 thousands Clearence.
Oh measure the valves on litle past top dead center also to make sure the decompression cam don't inter fear with measuring the Clearence. Im glad I looked into this ,cause the machine had a bearing failure on out pout shaft and the friction drive hub had cracked so in pretty lucky that we got to get this back together before a serious snow comes in off the lake.

Tecumseh Engine Information Tecumseh Small Engine Maintenance and Repair Tips Maintain your outdoor power equipment well and it will repay you in durability and trouble-free service. Here are a few useful tips on maintaining your Tecumseh small engine: Clean or replace spark plugs frequently. Most small engines use a single spark plug, so if the spark plug fails, it stops the engine completely.
Inspect engine spark plug for damage or corrosion and if mildly corroded spray with carburetor cleaner, and clean away deposits with a wire brush. If spark plug is too corroded, replace with a new one.
Always have spare spark plugs correct size and heat range for your engine on hand so you can replace whenever necessary. Spark Plug for Tecumseh Small Engine You should inspect the oil in your engine for level and quality before every use of your equipment.
Oil should be changed often, and will if done so will protect the engine and save on expensive repairs in the future. Only the best quality oil should be used so the engine stays clean and free of gunk. When you change the oil, change the oil filters as well. Small Engine Tune Up Kit After every two uses or so, remove the carburetor sediment bowl, empty it and clean well the inside of the bowl, as well as the filter trap.
Humidity and moisture cause water condensation to form and water in gasoline can shut down the engine and quickly rust internal parts. Sponge-type air filters on small engines should be cleaned after every few jobs as they rapidly clog up with dust, grass and garden debris. Most sponge filters can be washed in warm water and dish washing soap. Canister fiber or filament-type air cleaner elements cannot be cleaned, but need to be replaced on a regular basis.
Always keep a few extra filters on hand so you can change them when the need arises. Small Engine Air Filter The internal pressure created by the small engine - as well as the outside vibration - places a lot of stress on the fuel lines. Inspect the fuel lines as well as the connection points frequently and splice away any cracked or leaking fuel line areas.Bolts are made of different grades of steel. The greater the steel's tensile strength, the more torque the bolt can take and the tighter the bolted joint will be.
Standards for bolt strength grades are set according to a system devised by the Society of Automotive Engineers; this marking system uses raised dashes on the bolt head to indicate strength. Other systems use raised numerals on the bolt head to indicate bolt grade.
The SAE marking standard starts with grade 2, indicated by a bolt head with no markings whatsoever. A grade 2 bolt made of low-carbon steel has a tensile strength of 64, pounds per square inch or less.
Tensile strength is the amount of pull the bolt can withstand before breaking. A bolt head with three raised dashes in a radial pattern marks an SAE grade 5 bolt of tempered medium carbon steel with a tensile strength of at leastpounds per square inch. The strongest commercial-quality bolt is grade 8, marked by six raised dashes; its medium-carbon alloy steel has been quenched and tempered to achieve a tensile strength ofpsi.
The strength grade of a metric bolt, known as its property classconsists of two numbers separated by a dot. The property class is expressed in raised or depressed numerals on top or on the side of the bolt head, according to rules set by the International Standards Organization. The first number represents the load in megapascals -- a pascal unit of measurement for internal stress -- required to break the bolt.
The second number represents a ratio between breaking load and bending load. The higher the ISO numbers are, the stronger the bolt. A metric bolt designated as ISO class 6. Bolts of ISO class 8. An ISO Class Its strength grades are indicated by the letter A plus three numerals stamped on the bolt head.

I assume they meant the ring to wall distance and not the piston to wall distance. They mentioned taking a reading of the gap but did not say how to do that. How do you take a measurement of that distance? They would press out so not give an accurate feel.
Tips for Reusing Head Bolts
How do you measure the ring to wall gap? What are acceptable limits for the gap? Question 3. There may or may not be a ridge at the top of the wall so the calipers would read the ridge and not be able to get deeper. Is there a way around this without having a special gauge for taking the reading?
Lightly hone out the cylinder wall and go with. Just say the motor was lightly used and the wall in excellent shape. Would putting in. Question 5.
On opening up the case I looked for timing marks. I think one is a hole in the cam gear.
What Are the Different Grades of Bolts?
I did not move anything before taking out the crank and cam. I could not find another mark on the crank gear to mate with the hole in the cam gear. I should have made some scratches but did not for some reason. I think I got a phone call and forgot when I got back. Does anyone know the marks on this engine? My reading said to look for a raised dash or one of the teeth on the crank gear to be beveled. I could not find either or any other mark.
How can I get the alignment right? I could put it back together with the case open and hand turn the crank and watch the valves but I think I might be off a tooth or two doing it that way.
The crank journal the place where the piston gets bolted to the crankshaft looks shiny and without scratches. The piston and rings look undamaged.
The valves and tappets look fine. There is no place inside that seems to have gotten hit by the broken rod end or the broken bottom part. The only place that got scratched was on the crank. That was big bulging part I think is a counter weight for the crank. Given that all the parts seem ok if I were to bypass putting in rings the minimum repair would be putting in a new rod and at least cleaning and lapping the valves. The minimum job would be doing that and putting everything back in and torque what ever needs to be touqued.
Does that sound right?Reusing head bolts on your engine is not usually recommended by dealerships and car manufacturers. However, when you change your head gasket, or do other mechanical work to the head assembly, you can reuse your head bolts if they are in good condition and you follow a few tips. If you are working on your vehicle and need to remove the head bolts, here are some tips that can help make sure you can reuse them.
Because of the intense heat that the head is in, the bolts will occasionally fail when torque is applied to remove them. Once you have removed them, clean them and inspect for cracks in the threads of the shaft. After you have determined the bolts are still usable, soak them in motor oil for at least 24 hours.
This will let the oil penetrate and coat every part of the bolt. Use a tap and die set to clean out the threads of the bolt holes on the head itself. Make sure the tap is the correct size and does not tamper with the threads themselves. When reassembling the head of your engine, set the head bolts in place and tighten with a socket wrench. Once the bolt starts to get a little snug you should then use a torque wrench set to the manufacturers specifications.
Do not use any type of Loc Tite or other bolt adhesive. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
